I ran into an acquaintance over the weekend who’s been out of work since spring. She hasn’t gotten much traction with her search…some nibbles here and there, one interview she thought might lead to an offer – but didn’t – and that’s about the extent of it.
She went on to say she’s so disgusted by the fact that she hasn’t been able to generate much interest in her candidacy that she’s going to walk away from her search for the next few months.
Her strategy for now is to do nothing.
Not a good idea.
You know what happens when you suspend your search for a few months? You put yourself a few months further behind.
Do you really want to dig a deeper hole…or do you want to find a job?
It’s tough trying to land something right now – no doubt about it.
It isn’t going to get any easier in a few months, though. With the unemployment rate sitting north of 10% - and projected to stay in that range for much of 2010 – you’ll likely be looking at an employment landscape that’s deteriorated further.
Not to mention the fact that relegating yourself to the sideline for a few months means you lose any momentum you might have established.
If you haven’t been seeing the kind of results you want, then it’s time to review your search strategy and determine what you need to do to change your tack. But don’t just walk away from it.
